There is not one person that I ask, that does not want to be better in some area of their life.
We all have the desire to be better than we are right now, develop more skills, learn new things, have better relationships, delve a little deeper into life to get more out of it, be more mindful or present.
So what is stopping most of us from doing that?
I hear a lot of people talking about wanting these things but still feeling like they are stuck in the same place.
There are SO many reasons why people stay 'stuck' or don't change where they are at, even though the desire is there.
So it got me thinking about the one word that has popped up a lot recently and that is - curiosity.
The definition of the word curious is being eager to learn or know something.
I attended an education symposium yesterday and it was about the Networks of Inquiry and Innovation. A lot of the people speaking used the word curiosity.
As educators in schools, we so desperately want our students to be curious, to have the desire to want to learn, be inspired by what they are learning and ask questions. This particular group of people representing their schools from around Australia and the world were continuously asking questions, inquiring about how they could improve the quality of education by raising the curiosity within themselves, their staff and their students.
I felt so inspired yesterday - not only for my students but for myself in my own life.
Curiosity is one of the drivers of wanting more in life. If we are not curious and eager to learn or know something new, then we can not complain about being stuck where we are. We can have all the desire in the world to want to change, grow, develop etc but without curiosity in any form, nothing will change.
The future belongs to the curious. It belongs to those who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out until they learn, discover and grow.
The moment you are curious about something is when you are about to learn something new and that is your growth point.
Being curious is like having a compass which will lead you to our passions.
Follow your curiosity. You won't be disappointed.
We can inspire curiosity in others by being curious ourselves.
Curiosity is a gift. It's a gift of adventure, a discovery of hope. It is the gift of life and looking, searching and questioning for more.
A curious soul knows there is something worth finding even when their path has been darkened. Having curiosity means finding the light that shows another way.
We all know that kids are naturally curious. So the only way I see to help sustain that curiosity around learning - particularly in school, is to remain constantly curious ourselves. We need to model it.
As adults, we allow our fears to lead our lives in so many ways. We so desperately want to change but fear says -
- What if I fail?
- What if I don't have all the answers?
- What if I don't find the right answer?
- What if others are able to do this better than me?
We can spend our whole lives saying what if? Every single person on the planet thinks the same thoughts so don't you think it's time to do something different?
Let's start to replace the fear of the unknown with curiosity! It is the spark behind every great idea that has ever happened because someone was not too afraid to ask "Why?" or "I wonder what happens if I do this?"
Stop judging yourself about what you think you can and can't do and ask yourself a better question! Get desperately curious about life and what you can do, what you can offer and what it can offer you right now and allow your kids to see it!
It is okay to slow down, take your time, go back and find out more when you need to. being curious does not mean figuring it all out the first time and all at once.
Inspire your kids to be curious about their learning by showing them how to have fun, be curious, ask questions and take brave, bold action!
The inquiring [and curious] mind is never satisfied with things as they are. It is always seeking ways to make things better. It assumes anything and everything can be improved (Harlow Curtice, President of GM).
And as Tony Robbins always says -
When is NOW the right time? If you are going to do anything, take any action, get curious, ask questions - then, when is NOW the right time?
And perhaps....just perhaps....you will discover that life is fun, creative, wonderous and magical all at the same time!
Be inspired by your children's natural curiosity.
Be the inspiration of curiosity that you want your children to be.
Until next week...have a wonderfully, curious week!
